The location of the light was south of the mouth of the Back River on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay. The nearest city is Hampton, VA. The station was first established in 1829. The final lighthouse was first lit in 1829.

In 1915, the light was automated.
In 1936, the light was deactivated
In 1956, the abandoned and eroding tower collapsed during Hurricane Flossy.
