The location of the light is Mohegan Bluffs - southeast end of Block Island. The nearest city is New Shoreham, RI. The station was first established in 1875. The current lighthouse was first lit in 1875.

The lighthouse is a red-brick octagonal, pyramidal tower attached to a dwelling.

The tower has a flashing green light at a focal plane height of 261 ft above mean high water. The light has a nominal range of 20 nautical miles. The tower height is 52 ft. The light has a period of 5 seconds.

In 1993 the lighthouse was moved back 360 feet. The lighthouse has a small museum and gift shop in the base of the tower. The lighthouse was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1997.
