The location of the light is the north side of Bois Blanc Island / Straits of Mackinac. The nearest city is Mackinac Island, MI. The station was first established in 1829. The current lighthouse was first lit in 1867.

The lighthouse is a white cylindrical tower.

The tower had a light at a focal plane height of 53 ft above mean high water. The light had a nominal range of 11 nautical miles. The tower height is 38 ft.

This light was decommissioned in 1924 and boarded up. It was replaced by an automated acetylene light atop a 32ft tall black steel skeleton tower to the east of the old light. The light from the tower is visible from 101 to 311. It flashes a white light on a 2.5 second period.
