The location of the light is Mouth of Buffalo River / Black Rock Canal. The nearest city is Buffalo, NY. The station was first established in 1818. The current lighthouse was first lit in 1833. The tower height is 60 ft.

The light has been replaced by a green flashing light on a tower in front of the 1833 light. The 1833 tower is owned by the United States Coast Guard but is licensed to the Buffalo Lighthouse Association for restoration. The 1833 tower's lens is lit but kept intentionally weak to avoid confusing mariners. The tower itself is highlighted at night using exterior lighting.

Buffalo (Main) Light was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 19, 1984, reference number 84002383.
