The location of the light is Thacher Island. The nearest city is Rockport, MA. The station was first established in 1771. The current lighthouse was first lit in 1861.

The lighthouse is a granite conical tower.

The tower has a flashing red light at a focal plane height of 166 ft above mean high water. The light has a nominal range of 17 nautical miles. The tower height is 124 ft. The light has a period of 5 seconds.

The original First Order Fresnel lens from the South tower is on display at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in Groton Ct. In 1998, the Coast Guard installed solar panels to power the South tower and fog horn.

Emergency light of reduced intensity when main light is extinguished.

In 2001 the twin lights became the 9th light station to be recognized as a National Historic Landmark.

The island is closed to the public each year from September 15 to June 1st.

A 'flashing' light is a light in which the total duration of light in a period is shorter than the total duration of darkness and the appearances of light (flashes) are usually of equal duration. So in the 5 second period, the light is on for less than 2.5 then off for more than 2.5.
