The light was automated in 1966. In 2006, the light was decommissioned.

The island was transferred the Cape Arago Lighthouse to the Confederated Tribes of the Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians. The island is closed to the public as is the lighthouse.

A 'flashing' light is a light in which the total duration of light in a period is shorter than the total duration of darkness and the appearances of light (flashes) are usually of equal duration. So in the 20 second period, the light is on for less than 10 then off for more than 10.
