In 1873, the lighthouse was painted in its distinctive black and white diagonal checkerboard, or diamond pattern. The center of the black diamonds points in a north-south direction, while the center of the white diamonds points east-west. The light was automated in 1950.

The Keeper's Quarters has a tiny gift shop and a one-room "museum" of artifacts from the light station. The lighthouse is part of the Cape Lookout National Seashore and can only be accessed by private ferry. During the summer, the Cape Lookout Light Station Visitor Center and Keepers' Quarters Museum are open.

In September 2017, the lighthouse completed a modernization process. This included removing the original light apparatus (a DCB-224 rotating aero-beacon) and installing a solar-powered multi-tier LED optic.

A 'flashing' light is a light in which the total duration of light in a period is shorter than the total duration of darkness and the appearances of light (flashes) are usually of equal duration. So in the 15 second period, the light is on for less than 7.5 then off for more than 7.5.

Cape Lookout Light was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on Oct. 18, 1972, reference number 72000097.
