The location of the light is south entrance to Tillamook Bay. The nearest city is Cape Meares, OR. The station was first established in 1890. The current lighthouse was first lit in 1890.

The lighthouse is a octagonal tower. The light had a nominal range of 21 nautical miles. The tower height is 38 ft. The light had a period of 15 seconds.

The light was deactivated in 1963.

A 'flashing' light is a light in which the total duration of light in a period is shorter than the total duration of darkness and the appearances of light (flashes) are usually of equal duration. So in the 15 second period, the light is on for less than 7.5 then off for more than 7.5.

Cape Meares Light was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 21, 1993, reference number 73002341.
