About Choptank River Light (site)

The location of the light was southeast of Bernoni Point at the mouth of the Tred Avon River. The nearest city is Oxford, MD. The station was first established in 1871. The final lighthouse was first lit in 1921.

Open to the Public?: No    Active?: Destroyed

An ice flow in 1918 piled up 30 ft, knocking the house from the piles and destroying the 1871 light. In 1921, the deactivated Cherrystone Bar Lighthouse was moved to this site and became the second light on the site.

The light lasted until 1964, when the house was dismantled as part of the general program of eliminating such lights; a skeleton tower on the old piles replaced it.

NOTE: A replica of the second Choptank River Lighthouse was built on the waterfront in Cambridge, Maryland and is open for tours.
