The range marks the first leg of the maintained Craighill Channel from the Chesapeake Bay at the mouth of the Patapsco River into the Baltimore harbor and works in conjunction with the Craighill Channel Lower Range Rear Light.

A 'flashing' light is a light in which the total duration of light in a period is shorter than the total duration of darkness and the appearances of light (flashes) are usually of equal duration. So in the 3 second period, the light is on for less than 1.5 then off for more than 1.5.

Craighill Channel Lower Range Front Light was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on Dec. 2, 2002, reference number 02001420.
