The location of the light is Atlantic Ocean, 13 miles SE of Cape Hatteras. The nearest city is Hatteras, NC. The station was first established in 1897. The current lighthouse was first lit in 1966.

The tower had a light at a focal plane height of 125 ft above mean high water.

Initially the area of the Diamond Shoals was covered by Lightship LV-71 commissioned in 1897. Later lightships LV-69 and LV-72 alternated to relieve LV-71. LV-71 was destroyed in August of 1918 by a German submarine.

When the lightstation became active in 1966 the lightship WLV 189 had been stationed on the shoal since 1947.
