On February 2, 1976, a storm known as the Groundhog Day Gale, hit the island coinciding with abnormally high tides caused by the Saros cycle. The high tides and strong winds wreaked havoc on Grand Harbour Lighthouse as well as southern New Brunswick. Grand Harbour Lighthouse received significant damage. The lighthouse was neglected for years. It collapsed during a gale on November 19, 2013. The lighthouse is now just a pile of wood.
