The location of the light is Potomac River. The nearest city is Fort Washington, MD. The station was first established in 1857. The current lighthouse was first lit in 1902.

In 1882 a wooden fog bell tower was erected. In 1901, a light was added to the fog bell tower. The converted fog bell tower continues in service. The light was automated in 1954.
