Many lightships served at Frying Pan Shoals beginning in 1854. The current tower was activated in 1966. Frying Pan Shoals Light was automated in 1976 and then deactivated in 2003. The tower was replaced by a buoy in 2003 and no longer serves as an aid to navigation.

The buoy is red Lighted Buoy 16 which flashes a red light with a period of 2.5 seconds and has a range of 5 nautical miles.

In 2010, the station was purchased for $85,000. The station is now available for overnight stays. The station is accessible by boat or by helicopter.
