The location of the light is at Fort Jefferson on Garden Key / Dry Tortugas Islands. The nearest city is Key West, FL. The station was first established in 1825. The current lighthouse was first lit in 1876.

The lighthouse is a black iron hexagonal tower.

The tower had a light at a focal plane height of 86 ft above mean high water. The tower height is 82 ft.

Also known as the Tortugas Harbor Light. This light, along with the Loggerhead Key Light, were the only Gulf Coast towers that stayed in full operation throughout the Civil War. In 1876, the new tower, made of boilerplate iron, was erected atop a staircase in the fort and stands today. In 1912, the station was automated, with tanks of compressed acetylene replacing the butts of kerosene to fuel the lights. The light was deactivated in 1924.
