Heceta Head Light is named after the Spanish explorer Bruno de Heceta, who explored the Pacific Northwest during the late 18th century. In 1963, the light was automated.

A 'flashing' light is a light in which the total duration of light in a period is shorter than the total duration of darkness and the appearances of light (flashes) are usually of equal duration. So in the 10 second period, the light is on for less than 5 then off for more than 5.

Heceta Head Light was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on Nov. 28, 1978, reference number 78002296.
