The location of the light is Potomac River entrance. The nearest city is Scotland, MD. The station was first established in 1830. The current lighthouse was first lit in 1830.

The light was first lit on September 20, 1830. In January of 1966 the US Coast Guard turned over the Point Lookout Lighthouse to the US Navy and deactivated the light. In February 2006 the lighthouse was officially transferred from the Navy to the State of Maryland.
